Every age group is catered for in Croatia's second city. Whether you want nightlife and entertainment, beaches and shopping or museums, monuments and galleries, you'll find plenty to keep you busy in Split.
Take a boat ride from the port to Bisevo Island to see the world famous Blue Cave. It's the most profound of a series of caves on the island. You can combine your visit to the caves with a stop at the small fisherman's village of Komiza on Vis island. Alternatively, take the ferry to Brac, one of the most enchanting islands on the Adriatic coast. Beautiful beaches like Zlatni Rat on the island's south coast are popular with sun seekers and water sports fans alike.
The Riva promenade is one of the finest in Europe and runs the entire length of the old town. It's the perfect place to stop for a coffee and you'll enjoy the same impressive views of the harbour and islands that attracted the Emperor Diocletian and inspired him to erect his lavish palace as a retirement home in 295 AD. In stark contrast to the modern promenade, the Bronze Gate leads to dark basements and massive halls where wine was made and olives were pressed. Exit into the sunshine of the Peristyle. The colonnaded square was once the central courtyard and it's just a short walk to St. Domnius Cathedral or down the narrow alley called 'Let me Pass Street' to the temple the Emperor built in honour of Jupiter.
It's been almost impossible to avoid Game of Thrones over the past few years and part of the show was filmed around the city and in the Diocletian's Palace. Take a walking tour with a local guide - they're easy to spot thanks to the blue umbrellas they carry. Tours last for about 90 minutes and are a fascinating insight into the history and architecture of this exhilarating city.
While it can take over three hours to reach some Greek islands, often to be rewarded by crowds of party revellers, Split can be reached from various Indian airports in just a couple of hours. It's thankfully less spoiled by mass tourism than many other destinations and you'll enjoy 12 to 13 hours of sunshine almost every day from May till the end of August - that's more than the South of France!
Wander along woodland trails between gorgeous turquoise lakes that are linked by crystal clear streams and tumbling waterfalls at Plitvice Lakes National Park. The UNESCO-listed park is within easy reach of the city. Take a train ride, sail the lakes in an electric boat or just enjoy a relaxing lakeside picnic.
