Zagreb, Croatia's cultural and political capital, may be small city in European terms, but it has a big personality. Away from the coastal resorts that most travellers flock to, this city offers its own intriguing mysteries alongside laidback café culture and a packed calendar of cultural events. Thanks to its size, it's easy to get out and about, particularly to Mount Medvednica, a popular skiing spot, as well to Jarun Lake, a nearby nightlife and water sports hotspot. Many who visit the city feel they have discovered a secret gem, a place with fewer crowds than Dubrovnik or the Adriatic islands and somewhere that easily rivals Vienna, Prague and Budapest for beauty and culture.
The main city is split into two parts. Gornji Grad (the Upper Town), sometimes referred to as Old Zagreb, is the city's medieval centre. Donji Grad (the Lower Town) is home to much of the city's 19th and 20th century expansion to the south of the main Ban Jelačić square, which represents the centre of the city today.
This city offers everything you would expect a European capital to, and then some. From modern art, shopping and historical sights to unusual museums and world class dining, this is a destination that has it all.
